Interview with the Gakuranman

| Japan | 9 Comments |

Philip from Nihongoup recently asked me for an interview as part of his growing collection of knowledge on learning Japanese. I’ve never really written a post about how I got to where I am today with my Japanese, so if you’re interested, head on over to read all about my younger days.

Interview with Gakuranman at Nihongoup

Wise words from a wise man. It just seems like much more work than I had previously expected. I kinda lost my passion for learning another language. Partially because I'm more interested in talking to computers (Programming languages).

Best of luck to you on your road to fluency.

I suppose it has been a lot of work, but it didn't seem like it at the time (aside form when I was cramming for tests). But in my experience its been similar to what you said – people generally tend to do better at the things they enjoy and what they are interested in. Good luck with the programming! Become an expert in that field :).

Let's just hope that happens. haha.

    Cheers to self teaching!

I'd love to read it, but it asks me for a username and password?

Philip's site is down at the moment. I think it'll be back up soon though. In the meantime, why not check Google cache?

I just discovered your blog as a result of seeing you on CNN. How about that? I apologize to post with such a frivolous sort of comment, while aftershocks continue, during this tense and serious time – I hope that you and everyone you know is alright.

But I felt the need to comment, before I forget to, simply to say I’d been thinking for a long time about getting one myself, thought it would look cool. But after repeatedly failing to obtain one, I had second thoughts, and thought maybe it would look silly, or just wouldn’t look right. But, seeing you looking pretty good in one, I am once again thinking it could be fun to get one. I don’t suppose you have any suggestions as to how to obtain one of those high-collared black jackets for a reasonable price? I asked around a number of uniform stores in Tokyo/Yokohama a few years ago, when I was there, and remember finding that there, as well as online (Rakuten, Ebay), it was at least 一万円 for one… I’ve never happened upon one at a second-hand store either. So, just wondering your thoughts on the matter – thoughts on wearing a gakuran, and maybe suggestions as to how to get one relatively cheaply (or, if you’re so inclined, suggestions as to why I shouldn’t be looking to get one). Cheers.
