Casio Ex-Word XD-GW9600

At long last! After tax problems and delays, I’m the proud owner of a brand new Dench’! My old electronic dictionary, a Canon Wordtank G55 broke about a month ago after I dropped my bag. I replaced it with the Casio Ex-word XD-GW9600! I’m a sucker for technology ^_^;. Check out the pictures!

denchIt’s packed with really good dictionaries including, at long last, the full Oxford English Dictionary. I have always had to make do with the ‘English Collocations’ dictionary when using Canon, and since I often need to look up strange words that appear in Philosophy and have a general tendency to word-play anyway, it’s a welcome addition! I decided to change brands as I have owned two Canon Wordtanks (G50 and G55), one of which stopped working right after the warranty expired, and I heard today in my class that another student’s dictionary – a Canon model – has become broken… Let’s hope the Casio model lasts many years!

Though I loved the kanji stroke order viewer on my Canon Wordtank, in place of that the Casio Ex-word has a ‘tegaki’ (handwriting) panel and stylus! No more counting kanji strokes and spending years hunting for the reading of a particular kanji. Now I can just write in the kanji I see and have it pop up!

Also, this electronic dictionary contans many well-known and useful dictionaries, such as the special ‘Random House’ English-Japanese dictionary, which includes pictures, a massive Japanese-English dictionary, kanji dictionary and even extras thrown in like specialist dictionary of computer terminology and idiom dictionary. Arguably overkill and lots will be lost on me right now, but the Casio Ex-word seems to be a hardy build, so I hope it will serve me for many years to come.

I bought mine on Amazon.co.jp, but you have to have it sent to a Japanese address. I encountered the tax problems when I had my girlfriend in Japan ship it to me (UK tax import).     Nice! Do you have a case or something else to protect it? I was thinking about buying a case for mine but I decided not to. But maybe I should, now I just use something that protects it against scratches.

      Yes. I didn’t write about the case did I? In fact, I hardly ever see the gorgeous glossy top because I always keep in in its case. This was the case I bought: from Amazon.co.jp.

      The dictionary sits in inside, held in by some sticky pads and a couple of straps. It can get a little fiddly, but by far the best thing about it is the fact that you can just flip it open quickly. No more messing around putting your dictionary in and out of the case!
